This module focus the uses of AR and VR in Industry 4.0 environments.

Overview

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) have given us entirely new ways of accessing information. In almost all Industry 4.0 technologies information is the key, with the focus on gathering it and processing it so that the operators can make better decisions. By using the AR and VR technologies, we can achieve more efficient access to this data, better insight into virtual prototypes on all scales and interact with Industry 4.0 systems in a more intuitive manner.

This module aims to describe some of the functions of AR and VR technologies in Industry 4.0 systems. These technologies enable us to rapidly prototype products, inspect their ergonomic aspects, as well as the production processes at a much lower cost with better cognitive aspects than the more traditional methods. In this module we explore methods and tools for product development and factory planning using AR and VR with possibilities of hands-on experience with some of the tools. Finally, the module will include webinars where students will be able to discuss the concepts that they have explored and learned in order to apply them in real-world settings.

Learning objectives
Describe the types of virtual and augmented reality-based human machine interfaces.
Describe the tools that are necessary for creation of AR and VR.
Describe technical limitations of AR and VR technologies.
Describe the role of AR and VR in Industry 4.0.
Demonstrate basic skills in using AR and VR to aid product development, operator training, and factory layout planning.
Module structure

This course consists of an introductory module where main characteristics of AR and VR are discussed as well as necessary equipment for using AR and VR. It is followed by a module focusing on the product development and prototyping using AR and VR. The third module introduces the student to VR and AR training and factory-floor planning. The latter two modules are based on a set of recorded lectures supported by additional videos and self-study materials along with recommended references, quizzes and a practical assignment.

The modules are based on videos, exercises, quizzes and reflections that you share with other participants as well as webinars for interesting discussions, Q&A’s and much more.

Time commitment

To complete this module, the participant is expected to schedule approximately 4 hours per week over 5 weeks (20 hours in total).
