Sustainability is of utmost important to build resilient and long-term lasting societies. Everything we consume need recourses to grow, create and make. Industrial production has a large impact on our societal impact on climate change, recourse use and geopolitical structures, making it an important topic to master and understand. This learning area aims to give an overview of sustainable production system and how we can create and assess better manufacturing and value creation, supporting circularity and efficient resource use.
 
We are targeting product owners, purchasing personal, project leaders and engineers that want an insight on how their company’s system and products can be assessed and improved from a sustainability point of view.

Describe and give examples to environmental aspects and UN’s SDGs that are most relevant to address from a sustainable production perspective, and give examples on appropriate actions.
Apply and show how environmental aspects can be incorporated during production development and describe appropriate methods and tools.
Apply and show how environmental improvement actions can be incorporated in production operations and its continuous improvement activities.
Apply and show how environmental aspects can be assessed and incorporated in cost and performance evaluation of production systems and describe appropriate methods and tools.
Describe the fundamentals of Circular Manufacturing Systems (CMS) and the four pillars of CMS implementation, namely business model, product design, supply chain, and information and communication technology (ICT) as well as managing the transition.
Analyse Circular Economy implementation cases from the perspective of the 4 pillars of CMS.
Describe fundamental concepts, challenges, and opportunities related to the concept of sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on how sustainability thinking can create value for a company, its customers, and society at large.
Describe frameworks for sustainable industry and transportation, such as the global sustainability goals of Agenda 2030.
Describe how sustainability relates to lean/agile methods and how this understanding can be applied in strategic thinking and improvement efforts.
Describe how various perspectives among people and stakeholders lead to different conclusions about the actions to be taken.
